Atayero graduated from the Moscow Institute of Technology with a B.Sc. Degree in Radio Engineering and an M.Sc. Degree in Satellite Communication Systems in 1992 and 1994 respectively. He earned a PhD from the Moscow State Technical University of Civil Aviation (MSTUCA) in 2000. Atayero served as the Head of Department of Electrical & Information Engineering and currently chairs the Quality & Academic Standards Committee of his college. He is a recipient of various awards and scholarships including the 2009|2010 Ford Foundation Teaching Innovation Award. Atayero is happily and fruitfully married.
