Covenant, East Carolina Varsities Sign MOU


Covenant University, Nigeria, and East Carolina University, USA on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to partner in the Global Academic Initiative Project

The project is a world culture course taught in a shared virtual classroom with students and faculty in countries in Africa, Asia, North and South America and Europe.

The representatives of East Carolina University, Professor Elmer Poe and Dr. Rosina Chia, both Assistant Vice-Presidents in the University, explained that the project, among other things was expected to help provide culturally diverse direct international experience for its staff and students.

Professor Poe also explained that the goals of the project, which began in 2004, were to teach knowledge and attitude to make students open minded. The programme also provides real work experience for the students.

In her remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Covenant University, Professor Aize Obayan, pointed out the great potential of the project. She said, “This is a classroom without borders”. She described the project as “fascinating” and “timely”.

The Vice-Chancellor said that Covenant University emphasized cultural understanding right from inception. She added that the programme would help the student have cross-cultural work experience that would improve their competencies which, in turn would, make them stand out.

Professor Obayan also appreciated the University’s Board of Regents, led by the Chancellor, for providing the enabling environment to make the project possible. She said that the University was open to other possible collaborations with the other 42 Universities on the project.

According to the details of the MoU, Covenant University and East Carolina University will cooperate in discussions to identify areas where staff and students of both institutions can work together through the programme of ECU’s Global Academic Initiatives that promote international excellence in higher education, using video conferencing and other Internet-based tools.

Both Universities also agreed to establish future collaborative educational opportunities in the areas of conferences, international students and faculty exchange, as well as the sharing of courses, research projects and information.

Covenant University also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Moscow Technical University of Communication and Informatics in the Russian Federation. Dr Aaron Atayero of the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering, Covenant University, who is also an Alumnus of Moscow Technical University of Communication and Informatics, facilitated the signing of the MOU.

The MOU would, among other things, enable the two institutions organize joint research projects in the area of infocommunication technologies application. There would also be student and faculty exchange as well as the sharing of publications, documentation and scholar information.
