283 Covenant University Students Obtain ICT Certification

A total of 283 students of Covenant University have successfully completed their Information Communication Technology (ICT) training and were awarded various International ICT certifications. They were also licensed as IT and e-Business Professionals.

At the Certificates and Awards presentation, on Thursday, at the University campus, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aize Obayan, noted that the event talked about future and globally ready graduates adding that it also lends credence to the entrepreneurship drive of the University as some may begin earning a living from the knowledge.

Professor Obayan said that the success recorded validated the University's leading role in driving ICT in Nigeria and the West African region. The University according to her had won the Best ICT Driven University of the Year Award three years running, 2007, 2009 and best in West Africa in 2010. She stated that the world has become flat and ICT is the common denominator, adding that the revolution witnessed in Asia was as a result of IT skills. “Today, the beautiful ones in ICT are already here and ready to give India and China a run and very soon, the whole world will be looking in the direction of the University”, she added.

She appreciated the awardees, particularly the MD/CEO of New Horizons Solutions, Mr. Tim Akano, for the partnership with the University that started five years ago, saying this is much in line with the new ethos in education, and not just about certification but being relevant. This is one way to show our relevance, she said. While congratulating the students for doing the University and their families proud, she said she viewed the occasion as an induction into a great future without borders.

Earlier in his remark, the MD/CEO, New Horizons, Mr. Tim Akano had said the 20th and 21st Centuries are the information Revolution Age where without ICT skills, no one can anything successfully. He said in his organization’s view, the best way to spread the knowledge was to engage students before they graduate so that they can be on the same pedestal with their colleagues in world class universities around the world.

He challenged the students to acquire as much skill as possible in ICT before leaving the University because this Century would remain the information age for the next hundred years. Mr. Akano later presented Scholarship worth N400, 000 to each of the three outstanding students to further their studies in ICT adding that the best gift for this generation is the establishment of the Covenant University.

Also speaking at the occasion, ICSCO Area Academy Manager (West & Central Africa), Mr. Chinedu Dibor enjoined the students to be ICT-ready before graduation in order to be relevant in the society.

Five individuals were given awards by the University for their Outstanding Efforts in providing indigenous solutions in ICT in Nigeria and entire Africa. They include the MD/CEO, New Horizons Ltd, Mr. Tim Akano, the GMD/CEO,Omatek Ventures Plc., Engineer (Mrs.) Florence Seriki, Pastor Valentine Obi, MD/CEO e-Tranzact Ltd, Mr. Wale Ajisebutu, Executive Vice-Chair, 21st Century Technology Ltd and Mr. Yomi Adedeji, MD/CEO Softcom Imagio Ltd.
