The need to adequately prepare for a target sector of the economy and value adding proposition has been identified as the sure way to secure employment or business appointment with any organisation.

That was the submission of the Guest Speaker and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Skystar Global Solutions Limited, Mr. Peter Ibeziako, at the Town and Gown seminar of the Department of Computer and Information Science (CIS) on Friday, January 29, 2016.

Mr. Ibeziako told the students that, “You need to be prepared for a target industry. Now is your time to research these sectors of the industry and prepare yourself for the requirements of the Computer Scientist in that sector. Get all necessary certifications for that sector before you present yourself.”

He also explained that the value they are offering is what would interest any employer. He added that they should be able to find a connection between their Computer Science skill and the industry expectations. “You must connect your skill to a need in the industry. Graduating does not guarantee you a job. It is important you bring value to the table. When you solve problems, appreciation will follow.

“You need a mentor and a role model in life. Don’t go watching movies during your holidays, invest in your future. Think of what everybody will come and use. What you create once and it pays you for life. Don’t work for money, do what you love,” he advised.

Also corroborating Mr. Ibeziako, his protégé, Mr. Opeyemi Emmanuel encouraged the students to think solutions, think global and the platform on which their solutions would operate. “You will only be remembered for two things. The problem you create or the solutions you create. It is the value that you bring to the table that determines your worth. The purpose of education is not to make career but to make mind,” he said.

Earlier in his address, the Head of Department, CIS, Dr. Ayodele Adebiyi, noted that the goal of the Town and Gown interaction was for the students to be abreast of what obtained in the industry, so that when they graduate, they would know what path to take in their career.
