Chancellor of Covenant University, Dr David Oyedepo, giving the state of the university address at the World Press Conference of the University’s 10 Founder’s Day Celebration.

This statement was contained in his address at the World Press Conference, to herald the 10th Founder’s Day Celebration, which took place at the African Leadership Development Centre (ALDC) on Wednesday, October 17, 2012.

He noted that the University’s visionary thrust is anchored on the premise that leadership is the greatest need of Africa today and that a solid base of good character and life-applicable learning skills are crucial to leadership development for the African and global community at large.

“That is why the University’s Core Values of Spirituality, Possibility mentality, Capacity Building, Integrity, Responsibility, Diligence and Sacrifice define its commitment to pioneering excellence at the cutting edge of learning”, he said.

The Chancellor reiterated some of the feats the University has attained in 10 years. He added that Covenant University in the area of teaching, has continued to blaze the trail by not only ensuring high standards of pedagogy among its Faculty but it has also periodically organized seminars, workshops, mentoring chats, public lectures to improve the quality of teaching and delivery over the years.

Dr. Oyedepo noted that graduates of Covenant University are proving their mettle in different sectors of the nation’s economy like Engineering, Accountancy, Banking, Telecommunications and the Aviation Industry despite the fact that we do not offer Aeronautic Engineering in Covenant University. Some graduates who are in the area of Aeronautic Industry include Femi Agoro (2007, Computer Engineering) is a licensed Pilot. Also, Michael Omokore (2008, Electrical and Electronics Engineering) flies for Caverton Helicopters.

According to Dr. David Oyedepo, all these feats are made possible as a result of the spirit of excellence in the graduates of Covenant University. “These Core Values are also defined and shaped our commitment to excellence and how we respond to the challenges around us. Covenant University will therefore remain committed to transforming students into vibrant reformers, innovators and experts in all fields of human endeavours and learning.

He noted that the University in the next 10 years shall be more glorious than the first 10 years. He added that the University will be further committed to creative and proactive development of the human resource base by its recruitment style, training and exposure of these to leading edge practices. The Faculty and Staff will be provided with all the necessary tools to guarantee excellence and high level productivity.

Also, speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Covenant University, Professor Aize Obayan noted that the University is celebrating the faithfulness of God in the past 10 years. “The evidence of the vision on all platforms in Covenant University is what we are celebrating. Sustainability is what we continue to celebrate”, she said.

The World Press Conference was immediately followed by a media lunch at the University’s cafeteria, where some media men who have been consistent in promoting the University from inception were recognized.
