The Total Man Concept(TMC) programme of Covenant University has been very impactful as a veritable tool for ensuring that a balance is maintained in the spiritual, intellectual and physical development of her students

This was the position of the Acting Chief Coach of the University, Mr. Obogo John Odey, on Thursday, March 28, 2013.

Mr. Odey said that the holistic dimension of the TMC programme is structured in a way that sees to the total formation of the character of students of the University. While the Chaplaincy takes care of their spiritual needs, the Faculty see to their intellectual developmentand the Department of Students Affairs through its Sports Unit handles the physical side of TMC programmes.

According to him, “We organize sporting events, fitness exercises and aerobics session. That is where we came up with the TMC jogging which is one of the graduation requirements for all undergraduates of the University and every student is expected to have a hundred percent attendance, even though it’s a zero unit course.

“Presently, we have University Teams in virtually all sporting events, from physical to recreational and mentally challenging sports,” he explained.

“Furthermore, we have records of our graduateswho are doing very well nationally and internationally. One of our students, the 2011/2012 Female Sport Coordinator, featured in the last National Sports Festival, Eko 2012, representing Plateau State in the Table-Tennis events of the Festival. Some of our ex-students are playing Professional Basketball with Dodan Warriors in the Nigeria Basketball League and a few others are undergoing trials in the National Basketball League, NBA, in the United States of America,” he stated.

Coach Odey informed that the monthly jogging exercise for faculty and staff will kick off sooner than later once the plethora of weekend activities in the university are sorted out. He said the TMC programme has gone beyond just the students to the point of attracting faculty and staff. In his words, “We have staff that come out to play Table-Tennis, Golf, Lawn Tennis and Football. Even, the Chancellor comesout to and play Table-Tennis and Lawn Tennis with us.”

He appreciated the efforts of the current administration of the University, most especially for its commitment to seeing that Covenant University participates in the Private University Games and even Nigeria Universities Games, NUGA.

The Acting Chief Coach expressed his desire to ensure that the University Sporting team goes global this year. He said the starting point would involve visiting other institutions of higher learning to compete with them. One of such competitions is the Inter-Varsity Games coming up between Covenant University and the Redeemers University from the 5th to 12th April, 2013.
