Elsevier Trains Covenant Personnel for Enhanced Research Output
Representatives of information solutions provider, Elsevier, were in Covenant University recently to train the University’s faculty, staff and graduate students for more effective research capabilities and information retrieval techniques, which would boost teaching and research output and position the University towards achieving its vision of becoming a world-class university by 2022.
The trainings, which covered the two journals of the Elsevier group, ‘Scopus’ and ‘ScienceDirect,’ included a session on the use of a reference manager, an App brand of the Elsevier group called ‘Mendeley’, which allows users to manage, read, share, annotate and cite their research papers in an organised way.
During her presentation, the Elsevier Customer Consultant, Africa, Genevieve Musasa, explained that Elsevier, which has evolved from a small Dutch publishing house devoted to classical scholarship into an international multimedia publishing company, is a world-leading provider of information solutions that enhance the performance of science, health, and technology professionals, empowering them to make better decisions, deliver better care, and sometimes make groundbreaking discoveries that advance the boundaries of knowledge and human progress.
She noted that Elsevier publishes over 2,000 journals, including ‘The Lancet and Cell,’ and more than 33,000 book titles, including a number of iconic reference works.
Ms. Musasa explained that the training would help Covenant scholars get published, provide them with top tips on writing, reviewing, grant writing and more; while giving them first hand information on publishing ethics – top reasons to publish ethically. It would also help the participants get noticed by teaching them new ways to promote their articles and research.
The Consultant described Scopus as a platform, which contains the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed research literature from around the world, including bibliometric tools that help researchers go beyond search into discovery and analysis. Scopus, she said, is the most comprehensive overview of the world’s research output in the fields of science, technology, medicine and social sciences.
Musasa stated that Scopus is for academics, government researchers and Research and Development professionals, who need a smart, efficient and simple place to discover topics or ideas from relevant global research, track impact, monitor trends, or to decide what, where and with whom to do research.
Speaking on ScienceDirect platform, she stated that ScienceDirect is a full-text online database, offering Scientific, Technical and Medical (STM) journal articles, book chapters and Elsevier’s peer-reviewed full-text content database. “It also has more than 14 million pieces of content - peer reviewed articles in more than 3,500 journals and more than 34,000 books across 24 subject areas. It contains more than 1,800 journals partially in Open Access, and more than 590 journals fully in Open Access and contains ‘Backfiles’ (digital archives), dating back to 1823,” she added.
She explained that ScienceDirect has a multidisciplinary database and when using ScienceDirect, one gets access to nearly one-quarter of the peer-reviewed scientific, technical and medical content published worldwide.
While making his remarks at the event, the immediate past Director, Centre for Learning Resources, Dr. Christopher Nkiko, appreciated the University management for making the invaluable training platform available to the University faculty. He emphasised the need to ensure that the ScienceDirect and Scopus journals subscribed to by the University are fully maximised by the faculty, especially for research purposes in order to enhance excellence and higher outputs.
Further training was conducted by the Elsevier team for the technical staff at the Centre for Learning Resources of the University afterwards.
