“We Are Driving Quality to Sustain our Brand….” Director, Quality and Academic Standards
Right from inception, Covenant University has maintained a focus on its goals and core values, bearing in mind the clarity of the vision and mission statement that gave birth to the University. That mandate has seen the University produce top quality graduates over the years and in a bid to sustain quality and standards, the University established the Quality and Academic Standards Unit.
During a recent chat, the Director, Quality and Academic Standard Unit, Dr. Shalom Chinedu, said that Covenant University, having covenanted with God, parents and guardians of the students has promised not to bake products that would just occupy positions, but graduate characters that would bring value to the job they are doing.
According to him, “we are conscious of our position as pacesetters in tertiary education in Nigeria, and it is important that we constantly generate innovative and impactful programmes that will meet national needs.”
Dr. Chinedu stated that the Quality and Academic Standards office was committed to helping the University draw, update and maintain a very robust, solution based curriculum at every point in time at the University. He noted that the very essence of the Unit was to ensure that standards keep improving, and not falling.
In addition, he declared that it is of utmost importance for the Quality and Academic Standards Unit to ensure that the essential conditions upon which university systems are established are at all times sustained and maintained in order to remain ever relevant to the scheme of things in Nigeria, Africa and the world at large.
“We cannot fail or take things for granted at this point. Yes, we are talked about in a good sense; therefore, we must, through adequate monitoring and curriculum, upgrade seek to maintain a higher standard of operation. This way we can signpost our graduates better and at the same time make the Covenant University brand one that will be desired by all,” he added.
On how the Unit has been able to monitor and ensure 100% compliance with the standard of delivery expected from the different Colleges, Schools and Departments, Dr. Chinedu said the Quality and Academic Standards Unit has a working committee at the various levels of academic operations of the University. According to him, “We have this office in operation in every College, School and Department. Representatives at the various strata send feedback to the central office from time to time, and this we do using the ‘bottom to top approach,’ all in order to ensure quality as prescribed is adhered to.”
He observed that with the Management’s commitment towards getting Covenant University listed as one of the best ten universities in the world within the next ten years, there would be need for the University to constantly operate under the principles of continuous improvement in academic delivery.
Dr. Chinedu decried the challenge of accessibility of quality education in the country due to a shortfall in the number of institutions available to give admission to the millions of youths seeking admission into institutions of higher learning.
According to him, Covenant University is currently working on extending the quality of education available to her internal students to the external ones through a classroom without border programme.
He stated that facilities needed to make quality education accessible to qualified students within and outside Nigeria have been put in place. This, he said, shows that Covenant University is not limiting itself, but is extending its influence across the borders.
He commended the Management for the quality of faculty that have been recruited into the University. He averred that the University has recruitment parameters that can only take in the very best, by putting them through various training sessions that upgrade their capacity and enable them deliver as expected.
