NUC Executive Secretary, Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed

Without the exploits of Covenant University, the initiative of allowing private individuals or organisations to run universities, taken many years ago, would have been a grand failure. That was the verdict of the Executive Secretary ofthe National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Adamu Abubakar Rasheed.

He made the submission recently at the Convocation Lecture of Covenant University, held on the eve of the institution’s 14th Convocation Ceremony at Canaanland, Ota, Ogun State.

The Convocation Lecture delivered by the Chairman, Strategy Advisory Committee, National Universities Commission, Professor Peter Okebukola, had as its title ‘World Ranking Parameters: Matters Arising for African Universities’.

In his address at the event, Professor Rasheed described the Chancellor and Chairman, Board of Regents, Covenant University, Dr. David O. Oyedepo as a very great Nigerian and a great citizen of the world. The NUC executive secretary said Dr. Oyedepo had demonstrated determination with clarity of vision and commitment, “because building this university and sustaining the reputation it has started building is not a small thing. Universities all over the world, the good ones, are ranked by reputations, and this university is building a reputation, and the chief builder of this reputation is Dr. Oyedepo”.

The NUC helmsman asserted that but for Covenant University, the whole idea of private university in Nigeria would had been defeated. “This university is the saviour of the idea of private university in Nigeria because we see what she is doing,” he affirmed.

Also giving her comments at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Chrisland University, Professor Chinedum Babalola, whose university had recently engaged Covenant as mentor, said that through the knowledge gained by her son, who is an alumnus of Covenant, and the exploits the University continued make locally and internationally, she could vouch for Covenant as the best University in Nigeria and Africa.

“So, together, Covenant University has become our parent. We are here to learn and by the grace of God learn fast. On this occasion I congratulate the Eagles and we know you will fly higher and higher. We wish you success; God will take you there because you have had a good foundation,” said Professor Babalola.

While giving his goodwill message, the Corps Marshall, Federal Road Safety Corps, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, whose son was among the graduating students, was also lavish in his praises and approbations of Covenant. He said that aside the exploits of his ward at Covenant, there was no doubt in his mind that the University is the best in Nigeria and one of the best in the world especially based on the accomplishments so far made by the institution both locally and internationally.
