ICAN’s MCATI Committee Lauds Covenant’s Accounting Programme

Team Leader, Chief Oye Akinsulire, speaking on the purpose of his team's visit to Covenant University

Nigeria’s best private University, Covenant University, on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, inched closer to receiving full accreditation of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) for its Mutual Cooperative Agreement with Tertiary Institutions (MCATI), with the latter giving a clean bill of health to the University’s Accounting Programme.

ICAN’s MCATI team had after its inspection of the facilities and equipment put in place for running the Accounting programme, presented its interim report to the Management of Covenant University, during which the leader of the team, Chief Oye Akinsulire, scored the University very high.

He said that Covenant Accounting library was well equipped, the course content was satisfactory, and the University far exceeded the minimum requirement of six chartered accountants among faculty in the Department of Accounting. According to him, though the Head Office would communicate the final report of the accreditation exercise, his team was convinced that Covenant University met the criteria for MCATI accreditation.

Chief Akinsulire, who described Covenant’s Accounting Department as exceptional in its approach to institutionalising best practices in its curriculum, commended the University for its commitment to the pursuit of excellence and for remaining a worthy example despite its fledgling status. “Covenant University is among the well respected, well recommended and performing Universities in Nigeria,” he added.

Earlier, the Registrar, Covenant University, Dr. Olumuyiwa Oludayo, had in his welcome remarks appreciated ICAN’s MCATI team for the visit, stating that the University Management had looked forward to the exercise, which would help the institution strive for more milestones. He added that these kind of visits and collaborations put the institution in check concerning the quality of its products.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Covenant University, Professor AAA. Atayero, stated that both the University and ICAN have a common goal, which is accountability, but the University has the unique goal of becoming one of the best in the world by the year 2022.

The Vice Chancellor encouraged the ICAN team to raise the bar when accessing Covenant, so as to make it easier for the University to improve herself.

Also, at the meeting were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shalom Chinedu; Director, Financial Services, Pastor Sunday Abayomi; Dean, College of Business and Social Sciences, Professor Philip Alege; Acting Director, Centre for Learning Resources, Dr. Jerome Idiegbeyan-Ose; Head, Department of Accounting, Professor Olubunkunola Uwuigbe and other senior members of faculty of the University.
