The Guest Speaker Mr. Ogbuani and Members of Mathematics Department

Students of Mathematics at Covenant University have been advised not to limit themselves in life, as the knowledge of the subject would make them vibrant and robust in thinking solutions to practical problems.

An Information Technology (IT) expert, Mr. Mathew Ogbuani, gave the advice while sharing his personal experience with the students at the Town and Gown interactive session hosted by the Department on Thursday, September 8, 2016, at the University campus.

Speaking on “Application of Mathematics in the IT World,” Mr. Ogbuani stressed the fact that Mathematics would provide the foundation on which they could build upon to become whatever they desire to be. “Mathematics is useful in all sphere of work; construction, banking sector, stock exchange, telecommunication, consulting firms, Aviation industry and even Law. It is reputed that one of the best lawyers in the world is a Mathematician,” Ogbuani explained.

The Guest Speaker informed the audience made up of faculty, staff and students of the Department, on how he came from a poor background in Mathematics to become one of the best in the subject at the university and was nicknamed “Mathewmatics”. The desire not to be the second fiddle, he said, gave him the impetus to be certified in other areas.

Mr. Ogbuani, who is currently the Senior Business Analyst at Clickatell Payd, had also been a Business Analyst/Project Manager at IBM, Solution Architect at Huawei Technologies, Etisalat and Glo Communication Limited.

He also advised the students to make use of the 24 hours Internet facility provided by the University and make Google Search Engine their best friend in order to get more information on any subject matter.

The Head of Department, Mathematics, Dr. Timothy Anake had earlier noted that the University instituted the Town and Gown seminar in order to prepare the students for the world of work. He enjoined them, particularly the freshmen to start working towards graduating with first-class or good grade, bearing in mind the possibility mentality core value of the University.
