Media Chat - by the Vice-Chancellor, Covenant University held on 13/02/15.
I want to welcome you to this media chat as we celebrate the faithfulness of God upon the University as we emerged No 1 among all the universities in Nigeria and West Africa, and also, ranked No 15 in Africa in the recently released Webometrics Ranking of 10th February, 2015.
Job 32:7-8 KJV
“I said, Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom. But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.”
Romans 9:15-16 KJV
“For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.”
Let me quickly add that in the recently released Repositories Ranking, Covenant University emerged No 1 in Nigeria and West Africa and No 13 in Africa.
This is double celebration and a validation of the various awards and laurels won by the University. Ladies and gentlemen, I make bold to say that indeed, this is the favour of God.
The Ranking Web or Webometrics is the largest academic ranking of Higher Education Institutions of about 25000 institutions all over the world based on web presence and impact. The factors being considered are Impact, Presence, Openness and Excellence.
The Ranking Web of World's Repositories is to support Open Access initiatives and offer free access to scientific publications in an electronic form and to other academic material. Thus, it motivates both institutions and scholars to have a web presence that reflect accurately their activities.
To us, this is a dream come true and a fulfillment of prophecy. We give God praise and glory.
This administration came on board in Nov. 2012 with a mandate to get the University listed among the top ten universities in the world by 2022. This was christened Vision 10:2022 - [1 of 10 in 10].
When we came on board, the University was ranked 10th in Nigeria and about 100 in Africa. Today, the story is different. It is simply the act of God.
We accepted this mandate [1 of 10 in 10] noting that faithful is He who calleth who also will do it. Again, we have learnt from our Chancellor that any faith that relies absolutely on God to deliver a prophecy is an irresponsible faith. This means that we have a role to play.
We embarked on an 8-point agenda that is targeted towards the fulfillment of the Vision. With the attained feat, we are convinced that we are set to conquer the World.
Holding unto the testimony of David when he was to confront Goliath, he said in 1 Samuel 17:36 KJV "Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, ......". We have conquered Nigeria and West Africa. Very soon Africa shall be taken and the rest shall be a done deal.
Recall where we are coming from. At the inception of the University, we:
1. Introduced Entrepreneur Education into our curriculum because we do not expect our students to be combing the street. This has been adopted by NUC and is running in all Nigerian universities today.
2. Abolished the award of "Pass" Degree because we don't expect our Kings and Queens to be so lowly ranked. Again, this has been adopted by NUC and is applied across Nigerian universities.
3. Introduced Dress Code and this is being adopted by all tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
4. Introduced Certificate/Diploma Programme in Leadership to our curriculu and our graduates will be graduating with this in addition to their major degrees. This is aimed at addressing the leadership gaps in Nigeria and Africa in general.
These are but a few among several other programmes.
Let me seize this opportunity to unveil other programmes that we have for the rest of the session:
1. CU/Industry Luncheon
We shall be hosting the captains of the various sectors of the Economy to a Luncheon to exhibit the Research Endowment of the University with a view to seeking collaborations toward developing home-grown solutions to both local and national problems such as:
- Food Security
- Political and Electoral
- Transportation etc.
2. Second International conference on African Development Issues (ICADI).
During the first ICADI in 2014, we hosted two Nobel Laureates, Prof. Thomas Sargent and Prof. Eric Maskin. In the second ICADI, we shall be hosting a Nobel Laureate, Prof. Pachauri and several other eminent scholars in the field of Biotechnology, ICT, Materials and Renewable Energy. The conference is aimed at harnessing potential catalysts for African Development.
3. Adoption of Mobile Tablets
The University has adopted the Mobile platform of learning by acquiring Samsung Mobile Tablets for every student of the University. This is aimed at enhancing learning anywhere and anytime on Campus. It is heart warming to note that an Eagle Company, Softcom, owned by an alumnus is the one behind this great move.
Gentlemen of the press, let me conclude by informing you that right from the inception of the University, the proprietors of the University did not mince words by declaring that we are poised to rewrite the history of University Education in Nigeria. We are set to offer Quality Education at its best and show that after all "dry bones shall rise again". The lost glory of Nigeria’s Education System shall yet be restored.
Finally, I wish to appreciate the Chancellor and Chair, BoR of the University, Dr. David Oyedepo, the Vice-President (Education, LFCWW), Pst. (Mrs.) Faith Oyedepo and other members of the BoR for the Spiritual, Financial and Material commitment to the University. Their quality decisions and support has seen us thus far. We enjoy:
1. 24/7 Electricity Supply
2. Unlimited Internet Access
3. State-of-the-art Teaching facilities
4. Conducive environment to learn, conduct research and live.
5. Well equipped library and laboratories.
6. Highly Spiritual atmosphere.
I wish to appreciate most sincerely, members of Management and the entire Faculty, Staff and Students of the University for their commitment to and belief in the Vision.
Thank you and God bless.
