Scholar Emphasizes Importance of Mathematics as MAN Honours Covenant Vice Chancellor

A Professor of Applied Mathematics from the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, Professor Mohammed Olanrewaju Ibrahim, has described Mathematics as the bedrock of all other subjects, be it in the sciences or arts.

He made this assertion at the recently held 5th Annual State Conference of the Mathematical Association of Nigeria (MAN), Ogun State Chapter, tagged ‘Mathematics: The Core of Science and Technology’, held in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics, Covenant University.

The event, which was aimed primarily at helping to build the culture of Mathematics in the mindset of the next generation, had in attendance students from a number of Secondary Schools in the University environs.

While speaking on the topic, ‘Role of Mathematical Sciences in Science, Technology and Engineering,’ Professor Ibrahim, who was the Keynote Speaker, defined Mathematics as the science that dealt with the logic of shape, quantity and arrangement.

He urged the participating students to understand that Mathematics was the building block for every profession and required to be given adequate attention while in school. He explained that his passion to see young people excel in mathematics was informed by the fact that he was not lucky to have good teachers and people around him to encourage him to embrace mathematics in his earlier school days, but he was lucky to have picked up as he progressed.

In his remarks, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Akan Williams, representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor A.A.A. Atayero, stated that Covenant University had come a long way in the pursuit of her vision to be among the top 10 Universities in the world by the year 2022. “Going by the most recent ranking by the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, Covenant University is now No. 1 in Nigeria and West Africa and No. 4 in Africa. The latest ranking of Emerging Economies also has Covenant ranking 91,” he stated.

Professor Akan said that as a Professor of Chemistry, he could relate with the points made by the Keynote Speaker as regards the importance of Mathematics in science and technology. He appreciated the organisers of the conference for the impact MAN was making on pupils and also thanked the association for giving Covenant the opportunity to host the programme.

One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of an award by MAN to the Covenant University Vice-Chancellor, Professor AAA. Atayero, in acknowledgement of his support to MAN and its goals of promoting the study of mathematics. The award, presented by the former Director, National Mathematical Centre, Abuja, Professor A.R.T Solarin, was received on behalf of Professor Atayero by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Akan Williams.

Amongst other dignitaries at the event were Mr. Ephesus Tabiti, representing the Ogun State Honourable Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Sidi Osho; and the Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Primary, Secondary, and Vocational Education, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, represented by Mrs. Kehinde Anifowose.
