Students Advised On Self Development


Students of the Department of Accounting have been urged to enroll in professional programmes and engage in self-development to enhance their relevance in the Oil and Gas, Agriculture, Telecoms and Marketing sectors, among others.

This advice was given by the General Manager, Union Bank of Nigeria, Mr. David Isiavwe, in a presentation titled “The Role of the Accountant in Modern Business Organizations” at a town and gown interaction on Thursday, February 26, 2015.

He stated further that as an accountant in the Oil and Gas, Marketing and Agricultural Sectors, one is expected to build and add value to business and provide service to clients.

According to him, one thing that is common to all organizations is that accountants play vital roles in the successful achievement of their strategic objectives by ensuring that critical ingredients required for decision making are prepared and presented in the required format.

He added that modern organizations are becoming complex and this has created a greater need for information that is transparent, reliable, complete and accurate, thereby increasing the work of an accountant.

Mr. Isiavwe stated that accountants have the primary responsibility of managing, correcting and reporting an organization’s account. He also highlighted ideal qualities of an accountant. These are management and accounting skills, budgeting and financial forecasting skills, good leadership and supervisory skills, honesty and integrity, good knowledge of information technology, good analytical and reasoning skills.

He, therefore, enjoined the students to employ principles of Timeliness, Efficiency, Effectiveness and other ideal qualities of accountants in their work.

In his remarks, the Deputy Dean, School of Business, Dr. Francis Iyoha, urged the students to venture into business to add value. He added that it was imperative to develop skills and emotional intelligence.

The Head, Department of Accounting, Dr. Uwuigbe, advised the students to make themselves relevant for the modern business organization and keep themselves apprise of current happenings.

In attendance at the programme were faculty, staff and students of the Department of Accounting.
