The Chancellor of Covenant University, Dr. David O. Oyedepo, has charged students of the institution to embrace the Bible as their most trusted companion and life manual during the upcoming summer holiday. He gave this powerful admonition during the 2024/2025 End-of-Session Closing Assembly, held at the University Chapel, following the conclusion of the Omega Semester examinations.
Delivering his address titled, ‘The Bible, The Answer Book of Life,’ Dr. Oyedepo emphasized the unparalleled value of the Holy Scriptures in shaping lives and destinies. According to him, the Bible is not a mystical book reserved for diviners and prophets, but rather God’s ultimate guide for purposeful living and dominion on the earth.
“The Bible is not for religious entertainment or occasional consultation,” the Chancellor declared. “It is a daily manual for victorious living. Everything good that people celebrate about Covenant University today, is a direct outcome of a life strictly governed by Biblical principles.”
He went on to share a personal testimony, recounting how his unwavering faith in the Word of God led to his divine healing from tuberculosis in his youth. He explained that after reading through the Synoptic Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles, he prayed a simple but bold prayer: “If you’re the One they speak about in these pages, then heal me now.” That very night, he was completely healed — an experience that further deepened his commitment to a Word-based life.
Quoting Proverbs and Deuteronomy, Dr. Oyedepo reminded students that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and that a consistent engagement with the Word of God will not only guide them, but also elevate them above their peers. “The Bible,” he said, “contains the answers to life’s toughest questions. Make it your closest companion. Let it shape your thoughts, decisions, and vision for the future.”
As the students head home for the long break, the Chancellor advised them to fill their days with meaningful activities, including the reading of insightful books, and personal development pursuits, and to especially maintain a close relationship with the Bible. “Deuteronomy 28:1 makes it clear, that those who diligently follow God's Word are set above nations. You must be deliberate about creating the future you desire,” he noted.
Dr. Oyedepo further stressed that the Bible is not just a book of promises but also a strategic manual for problem-solving. “Children of God are equipped with foresight. You’re not meant to be caught off-guard like others. Through the Word, you can anticipate and overcome life’s challenges before they even arise.”
Earlier in the assembly, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Timothy Anake, expressed gratitude to God for seeing the students through the academic session, particularly the recently concluded Omega Semester. He urged them to remain spiritually connected during the holidays and to continue in the values they’ve imbibed throughout their stay at the University.
He also congratulated the graduating students who will be participating in the two-week, ‘Towards a Total Graduate,’ programme, describing it as a critical step in preparing them for life beyond the University walls. “Go out and represent Covenant University well,” he said. “Be the light in your fields and industries, and always remain worthy ambassadors of this great institution.”
As the students prepare to embark on their holiday journeys, the resounding message from Covenant University leadership is clear: Let the Bible be your anchor, your guide, and your project during this season and always.
