The leadership of Covenant University, on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, celebrated its outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abiodun Humphrey Adebayo and other principal officers with whom he served during his tenure.
This took place in a special luncheon hosted by the Chancellor of Covenant University, Dr. David Oyedepo, in honour of the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, and his team, where Professor Adebayo was commended for steering the University to enviable heights during his tenure.
A professor of Biochemistry, Professor Adebayo was elected Vice-Chancellor of Covenant University in 2020, for a 4-year tenure that saw Covenant University consolidating its reputation as the best in Nigeria, as it was ranked 1st in Nigeria, 1st in West Africa and 6th in Sub-Saharan Africa, in the World University (THE) Rankings 2025.
Under Professor Adebayo, the tertiary institution was also ranked first in Sub-Saharan Africa in the Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings 2023 , while also soaring to an admirable 7th place among universities in Africa.
CU also made it to the 1st place in Nigeria, 1st place in West Africa, 3rd place in Africa and 73rd globally in the Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2025.
In his speech, the outgoing Vice Chancellor appreciated God for the enviable heights attained by the university during his tenure, while also thanking Bishop David Oyedepo, for his prayers, which he noted was his guiding light while in service.
Professor Adebayo's successor, Professor Timothy Anake, a professor of Mathematics told a gathering at the luncheon that he was confident that he would consolidate the feats achieved by his predecessor.
However, he noted that the new task of steering Covenant University to admirable heights was not without its challenges, but said he was buoyed by the giant strides already made by his predecessor.
“The shoe is big no doubt, that I have been called to step in… I'm confident that I have someone who has done it before and has done it well, in the person of Professor Humphrey Adebayo, whom I can run to,” Anake said
Also speaking at the event, the outgoing Secretary of the Board of Regents, Pastor David Oyedepo Jnr., charged the new team to consider their new assignment as a call to effective stewardship, adding that stewardship was an opportunity to enhance destinies.
In his charge at the event, the Chancellor of Covenant University, Dr. David Oyedepo, commended the outgoing Vice-Chancellor and his team, for what he described as a job well done, and charged the incoming Vice-Chancellor and his team to ensure the University transitions from ranking among the best to contributing vividly to learning, by advancing knowledge in ways that will positively impact the society.
The occasion was also graced by the Pro-Chancellor of Landmark University, Pastor Mrs. Faith Oyedepo. Also in attendance, were other members of the Board of Regents and the University Management.
