The Covenant University Enactus team has emerged winner of the 2021 International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN) award in the category of 'Whole System Approach' for its PET City Bricks project. Team Covenant, consecutive (2019 and 2020) winner of the Enactus Nigeria National Championship, became the first African University to win the award since its inception in 2009.
Other winners included the National University of Singapore in the Cultural Change for Sustainability category for their Towards Zero-Waste 2030 and the University of Leeds in the Partnership for Progress category for their Urban Biodiversity Monitoring Programme. The Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology bagged an Honorary Member Award for Facilitating Sustainability Literacy to Leadership Pathways for Staff and Students.
The Vice-Chancellor, Covenant University, Professor Abiodun H. Adebayo, while conveying the good news to members of the Covenant Enactus team, urged them not to rest on their oars. He said the quest to proffer solution towards sustainability of the environment must be a continuous endeavour.
Professor Adebayo told members of the Enactus team to be conscious that their little effort was making waves worldwide. As such, it was necessary to rededicate and commit themselves to the original founding principles of Enactus.
Professor Adebayo charged them to remain humble and see God working through them to attain the feat recorded. He promised the University's management's unfettered support towards making the PET City Bricks project a globally accepted initiative. "Let's see how we can drive the initiative more in the direction of improved solutions and readily accepted option in building globally," he added.
The Staff Adviser of the Covenant Enactus team, Mr Michael Fagbohun, appreciated the University management for its support and deeming the project worthy of entry in the ISCN competition. Mr Fagbohoun promised the team's renewed commitment towards making the award-winning project a revenue-generating venture for the University.
The outgoing student leader of Enactus Covenant, Adeolu Adegboye, thanked the Vice-Chancellor and the University's management team for availing the University students the Enactus platform, which had become a veritable avenue for many to learn leadership and take responsibility in proffering solutions. According to him, the team's successes in the national competition in the last two years had drawn more students into the group, thereby enabling them to maximize their time while on campus.
ISCN is a global organization working to provide an international forum to support higher education institutions in exchanging information, ideas, and best practices to achieve sustainable campus operations and integrate sustainability in research and teaching. Previous award winners are from the USA, UK, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, China, Saudi Arabia etc.
