Pro-Chancellor Counsels Students on Timeliness, Self-Appraisal

The Pro-Chancellor, Covenant University, Bishop David Abioye, has admonished students of the institution on the imperative of being time-conscious and regular self-appraisal in their journey through life.

Bishop Abioye gave the advice on Friday, September 10, 2021, in his message to the students at the school's Departure Assembly, a programme held to bid the students farewell as they embarked on the Omega Semester holiday.

The Pro-Chancellor, whose message to the students was titled 'Making The Most of Your Time', stated that the battle over one's time was endless, and that accounted for why some invested time while most people squandered it. He explained that people could invest money on one's behalf, but they could not invest time as to how one spent their time was a personal responsibility.

According to him, "Whatever a man becomes in life is within a frame of time, but what makes both the poor and rich equal before God is time. Time is life, and whether you know it or not, you are passing through time, and time will never wait for you. Therefore, value for time is value for life".

Bishop Abioye pointed out the need for continuous self-appraisal, stating that one must appraise oneself daily to make the most of their time. He admonished the students to maintain self-discipline at all times as they departed the campus. He defined discipline as refusing to do what you like and choosing to do what you do not like; living life as required and not as convenient.

The Pro-Chancellor advised them to develop boundaries, define their limits, and place restrictions on themselves as they left the campus. He also encouraged them to make their own rules and learn how to say no. The mark of discipline, he said, is the ability to say no without feeling guilty. "Those who do not know how to say no can never be known," he said.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abiodun H. Adebayo, gave glory to God for completing the Omega Semester examinations. He admonished the departing students not to take service to God for granted even as they went on vacation, as the dangers of levity are costly.

He noted that God had done the University well in the just-ended session. The University, he said, retained her status as the best private institution in Nigeria and one of the topmost generally, with her position in the recently released Times Higher Education (THE) 2022 World University Rankings.

Professor Adebayo thanked God for the six-man team of the Department of Civil Engineering, Covenant University, who performed excellently as the institution emerged National Champions at the 2021 Committee of Deans of Engineering and Technology of Nigerian Universities (CODET) Competition.

Earlier in his welcome speech, the Registrar, Dr Oluwasegun Omidiora, appreciated God for a successful semester, stating that God had seen the University through the 2020/2021 Academic Session successfully and deserved all the glory.

"We began the session in November, and finally, we are at the end. We are all changing levels in Jesus Name! 200 Level students of Thursday Chapel Service are now moving to 300 Level and Tuesday Chapel Service; let's celebrate God for His faithfulness," he enthused

Others at the event were the Secretary, Board of Regents, Pastor Adedeji Owojaiye, and other members of the Covenant University Management.
