Covenant University Strengthens Ties with China’s Leading Agricultural Institute

Covenant University recently took a significant step towards revolutionizing agricultural research and innovation in Africa, by hosting a delegation from the Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences (JAAS), China. The visit focused on building strategic partnerships to tackle food insecurity and enhance agri-tech development across the two continents.

The delegation, led by Professor Huang Jun, the Vice-President of JAAS, included top researchers and department heads, were warmly received by Professor Timothy Anake, Vice-Chancellor of Covenant University, and other members of the University Management.

The discussions centered on key areas like joint research, technology transfer, and climate-smart farming, with a focus on optimizing the palm oil value chain, improving rice cultivation, and training youth in agri-entrepreneurship.

The partnership aims to leverage on JAAS’s 94-year legacy in agricultural research and the growing academic excellence of Nigerian universities. Together, the institutions plan to establish joint laboratories, exchange programs, and innovation hubs to address Africa’s agricultural and economic challenges.

Covenant University showcased its 1,500-hectare palm oil plantation and plans to increase production, while JAAS highlighted its success in turning agricultural research into commercial ventures. Both institutions are committed to deepening their collaboration through a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with JAAS inviting the University Management to visit Jiangsu to finalize the partnership.

The visit concluded with a shared vision to foster innovation and sustainable agriculture, building bridges between Africa and China for a brighter future.
