A delegation from the Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences, Düsseldorf, Germany, has paid a long-anticipated courtesy visit to Covenant University, signaling a renewed commitment to strengthen academic collaboration between the two institutions.
The visiting team, led by Professor Felix Meckmann, expressed excitement at finally making the trip, which had been delayed for years due to concerns over security and travel restrictions from German government agencies. According to Professor Meckmann, the visit had been in the planning stages for an extended period, but perceived security risks had kept it on hold. However, he noted that those fears had been dispelled upon arrival, remarking that the environment at Covenant University was not only peaceful but also impressively well-structured.
“This visit has been long overdue,” said Professor Meckmann during the opening session. “We have admired Covenant University from afar for many years, and it brings great joy to finally be here. The serene environment and welcoming atmosphere are comparable to our own campus back in Germany. This visit marks a new chapter in our relationship, and we look forward to expanding our collaboration in tangible ways.”
The relationship between Covenant University and Ruhr West has been nurtured over the years through the Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) project, which has run successfully for more than three years. This initiative has facilitated virtual academic exchange, with faculty and students from both institutions engaging in joint learning activities online.
Dr. Isaac Akinwumi, Director of the International Office at Covenant University, expressed appreciation to the University's leadership for fostering a global outlook and providing a platform that encourages partnerships with like-minded, research-driven institutions. He highlighted that despite existing virtual interactions, there had always been a strong desire for face-to-face engagement to enhance mutual understanding and build stronger personal and institutional bonds.
“Our collaboration with Ruhr West has grown steadily, and this visit signifies the beginning of a more robust engagement,” Dr. Akinwumi stated. “Seeing our partners in person helps solidify the trust and commitment we've built over time through online interactions.”
In his welcome remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of Covenant University, Professor Timothy Anake, extended warm greetings to the delegation and commended their perseverance in making the long journey to Nigeria. He expressed particular delight in the diversity of the visiting team, which included individuals of Caucasian, African, and Asian backgrounds, reflecting a multicultural synergy that Covenant University also aspires to emulate within its own academic community.
“The diverse composition of your team is a beautiful reflection of what global academia should look like,” Professor Anake remarked. “Covenant University is also intentional about cultivating an inclusive and globally-representative campus environment, and we look forward to learning from your example.”
Professor Anake also emphasized that while the current partnership had largely revolved around the Built Environment, particularly Civil Engineering and Building Technology, there was a strong desire to expand the scope of collaboration to other academic disciplines. He encouraged both universities to explore opportunities in fields such as Information Technology, Business, Environmental Studies, and Social Sciences.
The visit concluded with a strategic session between both institutions, during which a framework for an expanded Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was discussed. The MoU is expected to outline plans for faculty and student exchange programs, joint research initiatives, and co-hosted academic conferences. Both universities agreed to work toward a collaborative model that addresses global challenges through shared knowledge and innovation.
Professor Meckmann reaffirmed Ruhr West’s readiness to welcome Covenant University faculty and students to its campus in Germany and expressed optimism that the strengthened partnership would yield long-lasting benefits for both institutions.
In summary, the courtesy visit marked a pivotal step in cementing a transcontinental partnership rooted in academic excellence, shared values, and a mutual desire to solve real-world problems through education and research.
