Physics Department Hosts Insightful Town and Gown Seminar on Cybersecurity in the Quantum Era

One of the proudest moments for any academic department is witnessing the success of its alumni and having them return to inspire current students. This sentiment was fully realized at the Department of Physics, Covenant University, as it welcomed back one of its notable alumni, Mr. Ewalouwa Michael Adeniji, for the Town and Gown seminar series held on Friday, May 16, 2025.

Just three years after graduating, Mr. Adeniji returned to his alma mater to present a compelling talk titled “Cybersecurity in the Age of Quantum Computing: Opportunities for Physicists.” His presentation explored the intersection of cybersecurity, programming, and quantum computing—topics that captivated the audience with their relevance and depth.

Delving into the intricacies of cybersecurity, Mr. Adeniji provided a hands-on approach to explaining programming protocols and how they relate to safeguarding digital systems. He introduced the concept of quantum computing, describing it as an advanced area of computer science that applies the principles of quantum mechanics to solve problems too complex for classical computers. Unlike traditional systems that use binary bits (0s and 1s), quantum computers utilize qubits, which can exist in multiple states simultaneously due to the principle of superposition.

Mr. Adeniji also shared his personal academic journey, encouraging students to take advantage of certification opportunities while still in school. He cited his own achievements—earning certifications in C++, Cisco technologies, and other programming tools during his undergraduate years at Covenant University—as examples of proactive learning.

"The field is vast, and there is space for every dedicated mind," he said. "All it takes is hard work, curiosity, and leveraging the resources provided by your lecturers and other educational platforms."

The session was both enlightening and interactive, culminating in a vibrant Q&A segment where Mr. Adeniji responded thoughtfully to students’ questions, further deepening their understanding of the subject.

Dr. Theophilus Adagunodo, Head of the Department of Physics, commended Covenant University’s commitment to bridging academia and industry through its Town and Gown series. He highlighted how such initiatives equip students for life beyond the classroom by exposing them to industry-relevant knowledge and professional experiences.

He remarked, "This kind of impactful engagement is a hallmark of Covenant University. The Town and Gown platform has not only connected students to industry leaders but has also facilitated smoother transitions into the workforce."

Dr. Adagunodo also expressed gratitude to the University Management, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Timothy Anake, for sustaining the Town and Gown initiative and continually enriching the academic environment.

The event was well-attended by faculty, staff, and students of the department. Also present was Professor Marvel Akinyemi, former Head of the Department, whose presence added depth and continuity to the session. The seminar concluded on a high note, leaving students inspired and better informed about emerging opportunities in the rapidly evolving field of quantum-based cybersecurity.
