Experts Explore Emerging Career Paths in Cloud-Based Technologies

Experts from the Oracle Academy, Ikoyi, Lagos, were at the Town and Gown Seminar of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences, Covenant University recently, to share industry knowledge with students of the Department.

In her opening remarks at the event, the Head of Department, Computer and Information Sciences, Professor Olufunke Oladipupo, appreciated Oracle Academy for the interest they have in impacting our students with much-needed IT skills. She noted, that every session with the Oracle Academy have always had a positive impact on the students who are the focal point

She encouraged the students to take the opportunity to glean from the invaluable gesture of the Oracle Academy very serious by giving the exercise the necessary attention required to learn and unlearn, so they can make progress in their journey to maximising their educational experience in Covenant.

During his presentation titled, "Emerging Career Opportunities and Certification in Cloud-Based Application and Infrastructure," the keynote speaker for the event, Danny Gooris, who is also the Director of Oracle Academy, highlighted various aspects of Oracle Cloud-based applications, including Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) hosting, integrated suite, scalability, flexibility, updates and maintenance, security and compliance, analytics and business intelligence, mobile and social collaboration, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML).

He discussed emerging career opportunities in Oracle-based applications, such as cloud architect, cloud developer, DevOps engineer, cloud security specialist, data engineer, data scientist, cloud sales and marketing specialist, and cloud consultant. Additionally, he elaborated on Oracle Cloud-based application certifications, such as OCI Architect Associate, OCI Operation Associate, OCI Database Management Specialist, OCI Application Integration Specialist, OCI Architect Professional, Oracle Cloud Platform Enterprise Analytics Specialist, and Oracle Cloud Platform Application Development Specialist.

The Oracle Program Manager, Bekere Amassoma, spoke on, "Oracle Academy - Advancing Technology Education Globally." She emphasized the shared goal of Oracle Academy and Covenant University in bridging the gap between academia and industry. She highlighted that the program is open to teachers and students alike, offering free education with an effective curriculum that can be integrated into the students' courses.

She expressed the organisation’s readiness for partnership and explained that Oracle's global philanthropic educational program aims to advance technology education, skills, innovation, diversity, and inclusion. The program, she said, provides free teaching and learning resources, including curriculum cloud, software, and professional development, to educators and students worldwide, helping them prepare with knowledge, hands-on practice, and career-relevant skills. She detailed the benefits, recommended courses, key outcomes, and curriculum offered by the academy.

Adeola Adenubi, Oracle’s Master Principal Solution Engineer, discussed "Emerging Cloud-Based Career Opportunities and Oracle Cloud Certifications." He emphasized the benefits of Oracle’s digital trainings in accelerating the adoption of Oracle technologies, learning new features, and opening new career doors through Oracle certifications. He elaborated on cloud-based career opportunities, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure certifications, Oracle Database Management certifications, Oracle Cloud Application certifications and their job roles.

Another Oracle Official, Orijae Olagoke, spoke on using Oracle Application Express (APEX) and highlighted the various types of database services needed in Oracle. He discussed low-code development and its applications in enterprise application development, noting that low-code is a faster, easier way to build applications. He explained who should use low-code development and Oracle APEX features.

The seminar culminated in an engaging interactive question-and-answer session, a panel discussion that included the speakers and two students focused on career opportunities in cloud computing, the importance of practice and experience, and the value of certifications.  

Also at the event were other Senior members of the CIS Department and officials of the Oracle  Academy.
