Covenant Applied Informatics and Communication Africa Centre of Excellence (CApIC-ACE), recently organized a workshop to orientate students about the expectations and responsibilities in their academic and professional journey.
The event which held at the Covenant University’s Center for Research Innovation and Discovery (CUCRID) auditorium, featured prominent speakers who shared their expertise with the students. The speakers include Professor Obinna C. Nwinyi, Environmental Safety Officer and an Analyst of Nigeria Environmental Safety Office; Mr. Lawrence Diji-Geske, Director of ICT at British Canadian University, Obudu, Cross-River; Mrs. Shola Coker, Dean of Student Affairs, Covenant University and Dr. Ademola Oyeyemi Adebanjo, Director, Medical Services, Covenant University Medical Center.
In his opening remarks, Professor Conrad Omonhinmin, Director, CUCRID, urged the students to take full advantage of the insights shared during the workshop. He emphasized the importance of applying the knowledge gained to enhance their academic and professional endeavors.
While making his presentation at the event, Professor Obinna C. Nwinyi, who is also a former Sub-Dean, Postgraduate School, Covenant University, discussed ‘Standard Operating Procedures Relevant to Health and Safety during Chemical Use in the Laboratory.’ He shed light on the goals of the Environmental and Social Management System (EMS), hazards and hazard control, and the principles of good chemical hygiene. Professor Nwinyi emphasized the importance of minimizing chemical exposures, following standard operating procedures, and maintaining a safe laboratory environment.
Mr. Lawrence Diji-Geske delivered a comprehensive presentation on ‘Safety Measures in the Engineering Laboratory.’ The topics he covered include occupational health and safety, accident prevention, HSE policies, first aid, fire safety, personal protective equipment (PPE), and ergonomics. He highlighted the critical need for health and safety in the laboratory to prevent workplace accidents and illnesses. He also discussed the importance of a positive health and safety culture and the implementation of effective workplace safety programs.
Also speaking at the event, Mrs. Shola Coker addressed the topic, ‘Dealing with Gender-Based Violence and Sexual Harassment.’ She defined gender-based violence and sexual harassment, provided statistical prevalence, and explained the types and impacts of these issues. Mrs. Coker emphasized the importance of creating a supportive environment, promoting healthy relationships, challenging harmful stereotypes, and implementing effective reporting protocols. She called for a collective effort to foster a culture of respect and support.
During his presentation, Dr. Ademola Adebanjo spoke on the topic, ‘Medical Consultations and Examination in Case of Workplace Accidents.’ He outlined the procedures and importance of immediate response, initial medical evaluation, detailed medical examination, and occupational health services. Dr. Adebanjo also discussed the significance oaf reporting and documentation, rehabilitation and return-to-work plans, and preventive measures to enhance workplace safety.
The workshop included interactive question-and-answer sessions, allowing participants to engage with the speakers to clarify their doubts. In his closing remarks, CApIC-ACE Center Leader, Professor Emeka E. Iweala, expressed gratitude to all attendees and speakers. He encouraged students to apply the knowledge gained from the workshop, and acknowledged the University Management for their support.
The workshop was very informative and engaging and equipped students with essential knowledge and skills to excel in their academic and professional pursuits. The participants include the CApIC-ACE team, faculty members, staff, and students of Covenant University.
