Kora Pay Officials Visit Covenant University, Deliberate on Endowment Fund

On April 4th, 2025, Kora Pay, a company founded by a Covenant University alumnus and employing several of the University’s graduates, paid a courtesy visit to the University’s management. The delegation was led by Dr. Steven Oluwatobi, the Chief Operating Officer of Kora Pay, who is also an alumnus of Covenant University. Dr. Oluwatobi took the opportunity to extend the CEO’s, Mr. Dickson Nsofor’s, apologies for being unable to show up due to another commitment but assured that he would visit in the future.

Dr. Oluwatobi shared the story behind Kora Pay’s generous 200 million Naira donation to the University. The idea for the donation came during deliberations over how the company could contribute to the celebration of the Chancellor’s 70th birthday. It was during this brainstorming session that the idea of an endowment fund was proposed. The endowment is intended to support students who are facing financial difficulties and struggling to pay their fees.

Mrs. Olushola Coker, the Dean of Student Affairs, expressed her gratitude to Kora Pay for the donation. She highlighted the challenges many students are facing due to the country’s current hyperinflation, which has prevented some students from resuming their studies. With Kora Pay’s intervention, she noted, these students would now find relief and be able to continue their education. She emphasized how the company’s gesture of love would significantly impact students, particularly the less privileged, and contribute to their future ability to help others.

The Registrar of the University, Mr Emmanuel Igban, also praised Kora Pay’s donation, describing it as a promising start for the company. He expressed confidence that such generous acts would yield a significant return, as those who invest in good causes are bound to receive much in return. He further stated that the donation was in line with the Chancellor’s vision for graduates to contribute meaningfully to society rather than simply seeking jobs after graduation. He pointed out that within just a decade, some of Covenant University’s alumni are already giving back to their Alma mater.

The Vice-Chancellor of Covenant University, Professor Timothy Anake, warmly welcomed the Kora Pay team. In his remarks, he reflected on the University’s motto, "Raising a new generation of leaders who are set to repair the battered image of Africa." He commended the company for taking responsibility for the welfare of younger students, noting that this act of giving exemplifies the values instilled in Covenant University graduates. He explained that adding value to others’ lives is an essential form of leadership and responsibility, particularly in the context of supporting students who face educational barriers.

Professor Anake also discussed the University’s commitment to making education more affordable despite the higher fees associated with private institutions. He explained that the actual cost of educating a student at Covenant is higher than the fees currently charged, and he thanked Kora Pay for aligning with the Chancellor’s vision to reduce the financial burden on students. He reiterated the Chancellor’s philosophy that no student should be excluded from education due to financial constraints.

The Vice-Chancellor also praised Kora Pay as a leader among the various companies founded by Covenant University alumni. He emphasized that the University is committed to increasing alumni engagement, and Kora Pay’s actions serve as a model for other alumni to follow. He noted that while he has not yet met Mr. Nsofor personally, he believes the CEO’s gesture reflects a deep commitment to the welfare of the university’s students and their families.

In closing, Professor Anake expressed his heartfelt appreciation for Kora Pay’s generosity and wished the company continued success as it strives to achieve even greater heights in the global business world. He also wished the Kora Pay team a safe journey back to their base in Lagos.
