Covenant University has come tops at the recent Nigerian Model United Nations (NIGIMUN) Conference emerging as the Best Delegation for the second year running, beating 31 other Nigerian higher institutions. This makes Covenant University (CU) to be the first institution in the five-year history of NIGIMUN to win the Best Delegation award twice and back-to-back.
Also, the university's only female delegate, Teniola Ajakaiye, a 400 level student of Elect-Elect representing Canada as a UN Ambassador, won in the Best Female Delegate award category as the first runner-up.
The Model UN Conference is held once a year in the nation's Federal Capital Territory.
At its first outing in 2007, CU, presenting a six-man group including two staff advisers, Mr. Olusegun Johnson and Mr. Sheriff Folarin (the leader of the group and a Fulbright Scholar that year) was adjudged the Best Delegation among 29 participating institutions.
In that edition, CU presented Miss Olubunmi Owolabi (Cuba), Toni Nathaniel (Switzerland), Odunayo Sodipo (UK) and Emmanuel Chude (Germany). Miss Owolabi had also won in the Best Female Delegate category.

At the recent edition in the close of 2008, which explored the theme "Climate Change as a Global Concern", the CU delegation was made up of Messrs Emmanuel Uche (Finland and an Elect-Elect student), Adetayo Adeyemo (China; Economics), Boluwatife Ogunbiyi (Psychology; Burkina Faso), and Miss Teniola Ajakaiye (Elect-Elect; Canada). The group was again led by Mr. Sheriff Folarin, a lecturer of International Relations and Mr. Olusegun Johnson of the Student Affairs.
In his closing address after the week-long conference, Nigerian Model UN Society (NigMUNS) Faculty Advisor, Chika Nwaozuzu expressed his congratulations to CU "for the consistency at the last two NIGIMUN Conferences in evident hardwork, high sense of discipline, demonstration of brilliance, diplomatic finesse and leadership" and "for this huge victory which now appears to have become its birthright".
Mr. Nwaozuzu charged other institutions at subsequent NIGIMUNs to take examples from the winning university in the areas of "discipline, hardwork and leadership".
The 2007 and 2008 NIGIMUN conferences attracted the Presidency, members of the diplomatic corps, university leadership and media practitioners. The conference also took delegates to various embassies, high commissions and places of diplomatic importance.
