Sporting activities at Covenant University reached the climax over the weekend as the University successfully hosted Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State, to inter-varsity friendly games between November 24 and 26, 2006 at the University’s Halls of Residence Sports Centre.
The games, which were officially declared open by the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Daniel Rotimi , on behalf of the Chancellor, Dr David Oyedepo, who later graced the occasion, featured football, basketball, volleyball, chess, scrabble, badminton, lawn tennis and table tennis.
The Chancellor in his remarks extolled the leadership platform of sports and encouraged students to embrace it, so as to build up their physical stamina for future exploits.
At the end of the keenly contested games, CU emerged the overall winners with 13 wins, four draws and three losses, while the visiting team recorded four wins, four draws and 13 losses.
The games, which were organized primarily to foster inter-varsity friendship as well as to compliment the physical aspect of the University’s Total Man Concept curriculum, also attracted other dignitaries, including the Vice Chancellor, Prof Aize Obayan, the Registrar, Yemi Nathaniel, and several other faculty and staff.
Meanwhile, the athletes and officials from both Universities were treated to a get-together-dinner at the end of the events in appreciation of God for the success of the games. Also, on Sunday November 26, the visiting sportsmen and women worshipped alongside their host counterparts at the University Chapel.
In her remarks at a departure gathering organized for the visitors, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Aize Obayan, extolled the virtues of godly character, self-restraint, high sense of discipline and friendliness exhibited by the visitors. Members of the Bowen University, numbering about 115, were later presented with CU souvenirs.
