The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Professor Julius Okojie has praised Covenant University for its achievements, saying that the University had done more than Harvard did during the first century of its existence.
The NUC helmsman who said this during a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor, Prof Aize Obayan in her office, as part of his official visit to the University on Wednesday, June 27, 2007, said the University had got to a level where it should easily attract students from other West African countries.
Prof Okojie while giving situational report of the state of university education in the country and the efforts of his regulatory body in driving quality assurance in the system, said education should be driven by demands of the open market, adding that hope of tertiary education in Nigeria lies in the private Universities. He promised that his commission would continue to address the issue of emancipation of education in Nigeria.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Aize Obayan, appreciated the NUC for what it stands for in the context of higher education in Nigeria. She also congratulated Prof Okojie for the success of the just concluded University programmes audit and the commission’s drive for professional certification in ICT related issues in Nigerian Universities.
In the cause of the visit, Prof Okojie inspected some ICT facilities in the University, including the ICT Certification Laboratory, the Computer Laboratory, the Multi-media laboratory in the Centre for Learning Resources, among others.
