Covenant partners Host Community to combat spread of Coronavirus

Covenant University has through her Community Development Impact Initiative Committee (CU-CDIIC) continued to sensitize residents of Ota community and environs, in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, Ogun State, on the need to adhere to established medical directives towards slowing the spread of the dreaded Coronavirus.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor AAA. Atayero, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Akan Williams, had at a recent meeting donated hand sanitizers to the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government COVID-19 Emergence, Preparedness and Response Committee, for distribution to people in the ten wards that make up the Council area.

Professor Williams noted that the situation the world had found itself required that all hands should be on deck to curtail the spread of the virus. He stated that while the government, medical experts, and academics were playing their parts to restore normalcy, religious bodies across denominations needed to intercede and pray for God to put an end to the contagion in good speed.

The Professor of Chemistry appealed to members of the COVID-19 Task Force in Ota to get the populace acquainted with symptoms of coronavirus and necessary information that would help them reduce the risk of infection and transmission of the virus.

In his response, the Head, Transition Committee, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Council, Alhaji Wasiu Adewale Lawal, who doubles as Head of the COVID-19 committee, appreciated the Management of Covenant for the kind gesture. He lauded the consistent investments that Covenant University had made in the development of the Ota community.

Alhaji Lawal, who came in the company of other members of the committee including the Chair, CU-CDIIC, Dr Tayo George, commended the proprietor-base of the University for the food palliatives, sanitary materials and medical supplies given both at the State and local government levels.

He stated that making the University’s FM station, Hebron 95.9 FM, available for the task force to continue to update citizens and residents of the local council had gone a long way in reducing chaos since the lockdown came into effect.

According to him, “The vehicle of communication you have given to us to reach out to the teeming populace of our community cannot be quantified in monetary terms, as we have consistently used the power of radio to ensure continuous education and sensitization of our people”.

While informing the University Management the activities of the task force in the fight against the spread of coronavirus, Alhaji Lawal narrated the steps being taken by the Ogun State government to ensure that every resident of the state remained safe, with the ultimate goal of bending the curve of the spread downwards
