DODOS 2019: Covenant Reiterates Commitment to Community Development

West Africa’s best University, Covenant, has reassured communities in her environment of continued support on the occasion of this year’s David Oyedepo Day of Service (DODOS), held every September 27 in commemoration of the birthday of Chancellor and Chairman, Board of Regents, Covenant University, Dr. David O. Oyedepo.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Covenant, Professor Akan Bassey, representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor AAA. Atayero, gave the reassurance on Friday, September 27, 2019, when he led some Principal Officers of Covenant and members of the University’s Community Development Impact Initiative Committee (CDIIC) to neighbouring Oke-Odan Community, in Owode area of Ogun State, for a medical outreach.

While speaking at the occasion, Professor Williams said that Covenant came not only to make sure that people in Oke Odan Community were healthy, but to continue a great relationship with members of the community. The relationship, he recalled, started when a research cluster visited the community and identified their needs which were being met. He also mentioned the renovation of the Oke-Odan Community Health Centre, which was re-roofed, painted and furnished by CDIIC.

Professor Williams said that Covenant was committed to the upliftment of lives and infrastructures in her neighbouring environment since the reasons for the existence of universities were Teaching, Research, and Community Development. He further thanked the Oke-Odan Community for allowing the University to be a blessing to them.

The Chairperson, CDIIC, Mrs. Aderonke Asaolu, thanked members of the Oke-Odan community for welcoming the team from Covenant at a short notice, especially the Oba (King) of Oke-Odan, Dr. Olurotimi Fagbenro, who made himself available for any request to make the medical outreach a success.

In his own speech, Oba Olurotimi Fagbenro thanked the Chancellor of Covenant University, Dr. David Oyedepo, for his ever ready support and service to humanity. He described Dr. Oyedepo as “a philanthropist par excellence, who goes about doing good just like our Lord Jesus Christ”.

He however requested for more from the Chancellor, mentioning that the Oke Odan town was huge and very accommodating to guests and visitors, which necessitated the siting of bigger monuments like churches and schools for the growth and development of his community.

Covenant University Chaplain, Pastor Kayode Martins, charged the people on the need for them to be spiritually cleansed since the drugs and medicine could only cure the body. He added that it was only God that ensured purity of the body, soul and spirit. “It is only by aligning ourselves to God that we find permanent solution to all problems,” Pastor Martins emphasized.

During the inspection of the renovated Health Centre, the Covenant team, led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Akan Williams, saw two women who had earlier been delivered of babies with same birthday with the Covenant Chancellor, Dr. David Oyedepo. The Chaplain, Pastor Kayode Martins prayed for the babies and their mothers, while the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Williams, made a donation on behalf of the University.

Amongst other activities carried out by the Covenant team were free medical services, donation of drugs and medicated glasses, tests for high blood pressure/blood sugar, and medical check-up for the Oke-Odan community dwellers.
