The Chancellor of Covenant University, Dr David O. Oyedepo, has enjoined Covenant University students to keep themselves actively engaged during their holidays, instead of whiling away time in wasteful and uncoordinated ventures.
He gave this injunction to the students during their Departure Assembly on Saturday, July 22, 2023, after the successful completion of the 2022/2023 Omega Semester examinations, which preceded the students’ departure to their various homes.
According to him, the students should go for structured capacity development activities throughout their vacation period, and come back to the campus as recharged and better versions of themselves on resumption.
He also warned them against aimless wanderings during the holidays, especially to destinations which their parents are not aware of, as it portends danger for them and their parents, who have spent a lot to ensure that they get the best in education, by sending them to Covenant.
The Chancellor implored them to set boundaries over their lives. This, he said, is because they are in Covenant University to be trained as reformers and therefore, should not think the way others think, but should rather live purposeful lives.
He cited the book of 1st Corinthians 6:12, as a good maxim for them to adopt, which postulates that all things may be lawful, but not all things are profitable. He stated that those who would become great in life are thinkers, not gallivants
Dr. Oyedepo used the example of Benjamin Franklin, who only had a 2-year education, but self-taught himself to become one of the foremost founding fathers of the United States of America. A feat which he achieved through diligence and self-management.
The chancellor also spoke about the exploits of Robert G. LeTourneau, who was a road side mechanic, but rose to become a great inventor and became so prosperous that he founded a University by sheer dint of hard work.
He concluded his charge by praying for safe trip to their various destinations, as well as their safe return back to campus on resumption.
During his remarks at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abiodun H. Adebayo, used the opportunity to reel out the various landmark achievements and awards which the University has garnered in the out-going session. He also used the occasion to thank God on behalf of the Management and Staff for a most glorious landing.
Lending his voice to the Chancellor’s, Adebayo implored the students not to throw caution to the wind, but to make sure they remain good even while on holiday.
Others at the event include the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olujide Adekeye; the Acting Registrar, Mrs Regina Tobi-David; the Chaplain, Pastor Prince Ogunmola, as well as other senior officers of the University.
