Covenant University Chancellor’s Cup: A Celebration of Sportsmanship, Team Spirit

The Chancellor’s Cup event, an annual sporting event in honour of the Chancellor, Covenant University, Dr. David O. Oyedepo, was recently hosted at the Covenant University Ultra-Modern Sports Complex, featuring finals for various sports competitions in numerous games, including swimming, badminton, athletics, board games, handball, rugby, female football, volleyball, tennis, table tennis, basketball, and weightlifting, as winners from previous matches qualified to compete for the coveted Cup.

Notable participants include representatives from Leadway Health Insurance, members of the University Management, faculty, staff, students, and external spectators who gathered to support the event. The atmosphere was electric, with enthusiastic cheers from students of various departments. Event partners distributed gifts to students, further adding to the festive mood.

 In his opening remarks at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abiodun H. Adebayo, commended the students for their commitment and team spirit and emphasized the importance of maintaining physical fitness to optimize performance as sportsmen. He encouraged them to develop fitness consciousness as a habit that will stay with them beyond their stay on Campus.

 Earlier in her welcome remarks, the Dean, Student Affairs, Mrs. Shola Coker, welcomed dignitaries and partners, expressing her gratitude and encouraging students to support their respective departments as the games begin.

 The highlight of the event, was the Football match between the Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering Departments, which had the Computer Engineering Department scoring one goal during halftime; thereby securing the victory. A relay race among all departments also saw Computer Engineering take first place.

 Before the main event, the Accounting and Mechanical Engineering Departments played a match with Accounting scoring one goal while Mechanical Engineering scored none.

 Medals were awarded to winners in swimming, badminton, athletics, board games, handball, rugby, female football, volleyball, tennis, table tennis, basketball, and weightlifting. Trophies were presented to the top teams in both male and female football categories, along with special awards and the ‘Team of the Season’ recognition.

 In his closing remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo, congratulated the winners on their achievements, encouraging all students to continue striving for excellence.

 Also at the event were other members of the University Management.
