Covenant University has, once again, retained its position as the leading higher institution in Nigeria, according to the latest Times Higher Education (THE) ranking released earlier this week. To the glory of God, Covenant remained No. 1 in Nigeria, No. 1 in West Africa, and moved up to No. 6 in Sub-Saharan Africa.
This achievement marks the third consecutive year that the University has secured its position at the forefront of Nigerian higher education. There were 54 Universities in Sub-Saharan Africa region that were qualified to be ranked and 21 of them are from Nigeria. This indeed is the hand of God, we give God all the glory!
In the 2025 rankings, Covenant University was placed in the 801-1000 bracket among nearly 2092 participating institutions from 115 countries and regions worldwide. The ranking criteria included various parameters such as teaching quality, research environment, research quality, industry engagement, and international outlook, where Covenant University excelled compared to its Nigerian counterparts.
The comprehensive assessment involved the collection of 411,789 data points from over 2,673 institutions and analyzed more than 134 million citations across 16.5 million research publications. Additionally, the ranking incorporated survey responses from 68,402 scholars globally.
Covenant University has previously been recognized in the Sub-Saharan rankings, where it secured first place in Nigeria, first in West Africa, and seventh in Africa, standing out as the only Nigerian university on that prestigious list.
This continued success underscores Covenant University's commitment to academic excellence and its aspiration to be recognized among the top universities globally.
The ranking, which evaluates universities across various performance metrics, placed the Ota, Ogun state-based institution ahead of other leading Nigerian universities, reaffirming its position as a model in university education.
On the top five spots are Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria; University of Ibadan (UI); University of Lagos (UNILAG) and (Bayero University Kano (BUK). Interestingly, Landmark University is ranked the second-best Private University in Nigeria.
Reacting to the news, the Vice-Chancellor, Covenant University, Professor Abiodun Adebayo, gave glory to God, appreciating the ‘Hand of God,’ which have been behind the University’s continuous growth and expansion.
He also lauded the passionate commitment of the Chancellor and Chairman, Board of Regents, Covenant University, Dr. David Oyedepo, for his investment in providing quality leadership, and structure, thereby creating an enabling environment for success in the University and spearheading a new revolution in education.
He reiterated that Covenant University is one of the leading universities in Africa founded on a Christian Mission Ethos; born and driven by a vision to raise a new generation of leaders and to reinstate the dignity of the black race. He stressed that the University is committed to remaining at the cutting edge of learning that is based on the Total Man driven curriculum.
