Covenant University Students Emerge Winners at TAC Industrial Games Challenge

Two students from Covenant University have distinguished themselves at the 4th edition of the Industrial Games Challenge organized by Total Automation Concepts (TAC) Ltd for tertiary institutions. The competition, held on December 21, 2024, aims to bridge the gap between academia and engineering industries through the innovative approach of "Gamification in Learning."

According to the project coordinator, Engr. Paul Ugoji, the challenge integrates key industrial operational processes, systems, and facilities into a gamified format, allowing participants to familiarize themselves with real-world industrial operations.

Covenant University was among six institutions shortlisted for the event, marking the first full participation of the university’s Petroleum Engineering Department in any such competition. Covenant University students Ms. Obin Ubene, a fourth-year student, and Aghanwa Daniel, a fifth-year student emerged victorious, securing first place in the Alpha 1 Petroleum Products Loading Depot and Alpha 1 Crude Oil Production Platform categories.

Their outstanding performance earned each student a cash prize of ₦50,000 and a certificate. Additionally, the Petroleum Engineering Department was awarded ₦200,000 in recognition of its excellence. Ms. Obin Ubene was further honored as the overall best student, receiving a brand-new laptop for her remarkable achievement.

This success is a testament to the university’s commitment to delivering high-quality education and equipping students with practical industry knowledge. The achievement serves as a significant morale boost as the department prepares for future competitions.

In further support of learning, the event organizers are providing 10 one-year free licenses for the applications used in the competition, allowing for their installation on any computer of choice. Future applications expected to be introduced include Wastewater Treatment Plant, Precious Metal Production Plant, Bio-Ethanol Production Plant, Turbine Power Plant, Oil Spill Contingency Exercise Process, and more.

Petroleum Engineering Department extends its sincere appreciation to the University Management for its provision of excellent internet services, which enabled students to successfully navigate the initial phases of the competition from campus. This achievement reinforces Covenant University’s dedication to academic excellence and industry relevance.
